Toronto is now among the ranks of world class cities including San Francisco in the United States and London, England with blanket Wi-Fi zones. The launch of the six kilometer Wi-Fi area in the heart of Toronto's financial district is being powered by Toronto Hydro Telecom's existing fibre optic infrastructure and is already partially operational. Another benefit of this development is that the Toronto Hydro Telecom Wi-Fi zone is expected to be ten times faster than any competitor's systems. The network uses the latest 802.11g technology and is also compatible with the 802.11b standard. It allows high transfer rates of up to 54 megabits per second which will mean shorter download times and faster surfing than what is currently available today. Among the key objectives of this initiative is to promote ubiquitous wireless internet access to corporations and consumers. Companies, such as Toshiba of Canada Information Systems Group (Toshiba), are poised to increase their sales in the notebook computer category in Toronto because of greater consumer reliance on an easily accessible wireless network. Toshiba was one of the first companies to sell notebook computers in Canada and is widely regarded as a leader in the mobile computing category. Toshiba was the first PC manufacturer in Canada to feature integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities in all its systems in 2001. There is broad impetus for companies to begin relying on the Wi-Fi zone for their connectivity needs: the most obvious of which is that corporations will not need to invest in expensive wiring of their offices that will need to be upgraded or rewired in the event of new technology or renovations. Reliance upon Toronto's Wi-Fi zone by companies means that more organizations will need to transition all their company computers from stationary desktop systems to mobile notebook computers. Customers will be able to log onto the network using the same password and user ID wherever they may be. Employees will be able to access their online resources in the boardroom, at their work stations, from the bus or in their homes. Toronto's city-wide Wi-Fi zone will accelerate the use of mobile computing throughout Toronto. |
